Job Creation Challenge

If crime is the result of poverty because of a lack of employment opportunities, then why cannot South Africa create sufficient employment opportunities? The reason can be found in the Global Entrepreneur Monitor (GEM) Report. GEM is an international organisation that measures entrepreneur development, as an indication of job creation, of a number of countries. South Africa, as a developing country, is grouped with countries such as Brazil, Argentina and Poland. Our ranking, when compared with these countries is near the bottom.

According to GEM:

  1. South Africans lack entrepreneur self-confidence.
  2. This has a direct impact on start-ups, essential for generating more businesses and job creation.
  3. We are developing a nation of job seekers instead of job creators.
  4. South Africa is slipping year after year. This is definitely not good news and a serious challenge for our communities and our future.
The challenge of achieving a Safe, High Employment and Prosperous South Africa is obvious. Coupled to a number of other serious challenges we face as a nation, we should as a matter of urgency, put in place a national plan that is able to take on and eventually reverse this serious challenge as reported in GEM.
